Throughout the history of art the female form has served as a focus for most of the great classical figurative paintings. Traditionally, this model has been seen as an object that the viewer may manipulate to suit their desires. Surprisingly, this way of thinking survives today. As a society we are constantly bombarded with images of naked or scantily dressed women in our everyday lives. From advertising to the movies, these depictions are used to excite and intrigue. I wish to reinvent this archetype by exploring new contemporary interpretations of the female form that provoke and challenge as well as exhibit the qualities that I admire in women such as strength and intelligence. Furthermore, it’s my intention that the women in my paintings refuse to remain submissive and demonstrate that they are determined to take authorship of their lives. My new collection The Lounging Soap Opera continues to explore these concepts. Set in the melodramatic world of soap opera, the heroine of this series is frequently seen lounging in poses reminiscent of classical nudes. However, despite her poses, she is still very much the central character in her story. It’s my hope that through this visual soap opera where humor and beauty are combined that the viewer gain a fresh appreciation for the power of the female form. Pick from a collection (right) >> |
La mujer a través de la historia del arte es el objeto de la mayoría de obras figurativas clásicas que conocemos, ella es el objeto a poseer; pasiva y siempre dispuesta a los deseos de su consumidor. Tras la repetición de estas imágenes, la mujer desnuda por ejemplo, hemos aceptado sin parpadear este tipo de imagen que se utiliza diariamente en miles de situaciones de la vida cotidiana; en anuncios de coches, programas de la tele, viajes a países exóticos, etc. Este modelo de imagen es el que se inspira mi trabajo, basado en la perpetua imagen de la mujer como objeto a poseer quién ni piensa ni padece. He querido reinterpretar esta imagen, darle otros significados, torcerla, usarla, destruirla, satirizarla, abusar de ella y todo lo que se me ocurra a partir de su existencia. Actualmente, mi intención es dar protagonismo a la mujer como personaje activo, poseedor de su fin, crearla fuerte y sabia, para olvidar su pasado victimista y pasivo como referencia. La mujer pasiva pasa a ser protagonista activa, jefa, poseedora de su destino y poseedora de quien la mira. A partir de este razonamiento, estoy deseando continuar una nueva serie titulada EL CULEBRÓN DE LA TUMBONA, que cuenta con una serie de cuadros donde la mujer tumbada es protagonista activa de una historia, donde lo ficticio y lo actual se combinan, entre estética y humor, creando una novela visual, reflejo de mi realidad cotidiana.
